Our purpose

Preserving the World's Water Heritage

"Water is the driving force of all nature." — Leonardo da Vinci

AquaFonte was created to preserve and share knowledge about the world's mineral waters — their geology, chemistry, history, and healing traditions. From the sulphurous springs of ancient Rome to geothermal fields in Iceland and sacred Māori pools in New Zealand, these waters are part of humanity's shared heritage.

Our data is contributed by geologists, balneologists, spa historians, and travellers worldwide — reviewed by an editorial team before publication. Everything is free, open, and Creative Commons licensed.

Our story

The idea for AquaFonte grew out of a simple frustration: the world's mineral springs are documented in dozens of languages, across hundreds of obscure government registries, scientific journals, and regional tourism sites — but there was no single comprehensive, free, multilingual directory that treated them all with equal seriousness.

Balnearios.org does this beautifully for Spain. Similar resources exist in German, Italian, and Japanese. But nothing covers the entire world with the depth that these extraordinary waters deserve.

We set out to build that resource — starting with the most historically and scientifically significant springs, and growing through community contribution. Every spring listing includes the water's chemical analysis, geological origin, therapeutic indications, historical context, and practical visitor information.

How We Verify Data

Every submission goes through an editorial review process. For chemical data, we cross-reference against official hydrochemical analysis certificates — the government-issued documents that classify mineral waters in each country. For historical claims, we require sources. For therapeutic indications, we only list uses documented in peer-reviewed balneological literature.

We do not accept paid listings or advertising. Our editorial judgement is independent.

The Future

AquaFonte is a long-term project. We are working toward full multilingual support in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, and Chinese — reflecting the languages of the world's great spa traditions. We are building partnerships with balneological research institutes in Italy, Germany, Japan, and Hungary. And we are developing a mobile app for offline access in remote spring locations.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Is AquaFonte free to use? +
Yes, completely. AquaFonte is free to access and always will be. We do not display advertising, charge subscriptions, or accept payment for listings. Our funding comes from voluntary contributions and institutional partnerships.
How accurate is the mineral data? +
We cross-reference all mineral data against official hydrochemical analysis certificates where available. These are government-issued documents required for classification as a mineral water in most countries. Where official data is unavailable, we cite our sources and indicate the confidence level of the data.
Can I use AquaFonte data in my research or publication? +
Yes. All data on AquaFonte is published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). You are free to use, share, and adapt it as long as you credit AquaFonte. For academic use, please also cite the primary sources listed in each spring's entry.
How do I report a mistake in a listing? +
Email us at hello@aquafonte.world with the spring name, the incorrect information, and the correct data with your source. We review corrections within 5 business days.
Do you list bottled mineral waters as well as springs? +
Our focus is on the springs themselves — their physical location, geological origin, and therapeutic use. Many of the springs we list also produce bottled waters, and we note this where relevant, but we are a spring directory rather than a bottled water guide.
How can I add a spring in my country that isn't listed? +
Use our Submit a Spring form. The more data you can provide — especially official mineral analysis certificates — the faster we can publish it. We welcome springs from every country and in every language.
